Roger Baptiste || Piano & Music Theory (Under 18s)

Roger likes to sit with musicians at a piano and get them excited about playing. It is this enthusiasm that he brings to ELSOM, along with his varied twenty-plus years of music industry experience

covering live tours, with established recording artistes, recording projects with emerging UK talent and established producers, music directing for concerts including church services as well as teaching in the Youth and Further Education sectors.

His teaching experience includes work with both Wandsworth and Brent Youth Services in the capacity of Youth Arts Leader where he ran workshops and summer courses and the well-established Access to Music chain of music colleges where he was a tutor for four years. He has also appeared on TV shows, such as Later with Jools Holland and GMTV.

Having started playing from the age of seven, Roger taught himself music whilst playing during family worship and then played in church from the age of eleven. This helped to train his ear until he decided to study music theory on his own.

A year at Hackney Community College earned him a LOCN Certificate in World Arts and Technology, with piano as one of his modules. After several more years of working and studying, he eventually went to the London Centre of Contemporary Music where he completed his HNC Diploma in Piano Performance, followed by a BMus Honours Degree in Music Composition and Production.

He now channels his playing experience, along with his music degree, into projects such as workshops for small groups, in various aspects of piano performance and accompaniment and individual rehearsal coaching. You can regularly find him in one of his ongoing roles as the resident pianist for the Ilford Central SDA Church where he also mentors several young musicians.
